BONUS! “Ups! What Did You Eat?” – Dog Food-Related Vomiting & Diarrhea Explained!

Why Do Dogs Sometimes Get Sick from Their Food?

Every dog owner has experienced it at least once – one moment, your pup is happily wagging their tail, and the next, they’re vomiting on your new carpet or rushing outside for an emergency poop! 💩😱

But why does this happen? Is it the food itself, improper storage, or just a sensitive stomach? In this fun (yet very important) guide, we’ll talk about common reasons behind dog food-related vomiting and diarrhea and how to prevent these messy situations! 🦴🐾

Top Reasons Why Dog Food Can Cause Vomiting or Diarrhea

🔍 Sudden Diet Changes – Switching food too quickly can shock your dog’s digestive system and lead to an upset stomach. Always transition gradually over 7-10 days!

🚨 Expired or Poorly Stored Food – Moldy kibble, rancid fats, or spoiled wet food can cause food poisoning. Check expiration dates and store food properly!

Food Allergies or Sensitivities – Some dogs are allergic to chicken, beef, soy, or grains. If vomiting or diarrhea is frequent, a food trial may be needed.

🍖 Fatty or Spoiled Human Food – Dogs can be sensitive to rich, fatty table scraps or leftovers, leading to pancreatitis (a serious condition!).

🤢 Contaminated Food (Bacteria & Toxins) – Salmonella, E. coli, or mycotoxins (from moldy food) can make dogs very sick. Always buy high-quality, reputable brands.

How to Properly Store Dog Food to Prevent Illness

🐶 Dry Food (Kibble):

Store in an airtight container to prevent exposure to air, humidity, and pests.

Avoid keeping kibble in its original bag after opening – transfer to a sealed bin.

Use within 6 weeks after opening for freshness.

Keep away from direct sunlight and heat (spoiled fats = upset stomach).

🥫 Wet Food (Canned/Pouches):

Refrigerate opened cans and use within 3-5 days.

Do not leave wet food out for more than 2 hours – bacteria grow fast!

If the can is dented or smells weird, toss it!

Is It the Food or a More Serious Issue?

Sometimes vomiting or diarrhea isn’t just about the food.

Here’s when to CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY:

🚑 If vomiting/diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours

🚑 If there’s blood in vomit or stool

🚑 If your dog is lethargic, weak, or refuses to eat

🚑 If dehydration signs appear (dry gums, sunken eyes, loss of elasticity in the skin)

Take-Home Messages 🏡

Introduce new food gradually over 7-10 days to avoid stomach upset.

Always check food expiration dates & store food properly in sealed containers.

Be mindful of food allergies and sensitivities – monitor symptoms carefully.

Know when to call the vet – persistent vomiting/diarrhea is never normal!
